Resolution opposing FGM passed at the ACWW Triennial Conference
The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) unanimously passed a resolution against the harmful traditional practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) at their recent conference in Chennai which took place from the 26th September to 2nd October.
The ACWW is one of the world’s largest organisations for rural women with members from more than 70 countries worldwide. This was their 27th Triennial Conference with over 300 delegates from around the world gathered together for a theme of “Empowering Women Worldwide – Encourage, Educate, Enrich”.
The resolution opposing FGM was proposed by 28 Too Many supporter and ACWW member Anitra Lockwood who travelled to Chennai specifically to raise this important issue which affects millions of women and girls worldwide. ACWW member organisations are now empowered to approach their governments to ask them to take action to tackle FGM and to work with other countries in a global effort.
“We are pleased that the ACWW have passed this resolution opposing FGM and urging for the eradication of this harmful practice” commented 28 Too Many Executive Director Ann-Marie Wilson. “It is through the passion and commitment of Anitra and other members of the ACWW that this step was taken. Hopefully it will encourage many more to stand against FGM and support the women and men working to end FGM in communities across the world.”
