FGM Helpline launched in the UK
28 Too Many welcome the new telephone helpline to protect girls in the UK from female genital mutilation (FGM) which was launched on Monday 24th June by the NSPCC. The free 24 hour telephone line provides advice, information and support for anyone concerned that a child's welfare is at risk because of FGM.
Ann-Marie Wilson, 28 Too Many Executive Director commented, “Earlier this year I met with the NSPCC and provided training on FGM to a group of their volunteers so I am particularly pleased to see them progress their work in this area and set up a dedicated helpline to protect girls from FGM. Although exact numbers are not known, it is estimated that thousands of British girls are at risk each year with FGM often taking place during the summer school holidays. Hopefully this new and confidential service will help save girls from undergoing this painful, dangerous and totally unnecessary practice.”
FGM is a crime in the UK and therefore while the callers' details can remain anonymous, any information that could protect a child from abuse will be passed to the police or social services. The Metropolitan Police force is also supporting the FGM helpline as part of its crime prevention work and has provided training to the NSPCC.
