Faith Leaders unite to condemn female genital mutilation and forced marriage

Declarations signed by over 350 UK faith leaders were presented to the UK Government at the Girl Summit in London on 22nd July 2014. The declarations make clear that female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage (FM) are not religious requirements and that no faith supports these harmful practices.

“This public declaration by faith leaders is important as many people mistakenly believe that FGM is required by their religion. Faith leaders and others in influential positions need to speak out against FGM and forced marriage to help to dispel myths and encourage communities to abandon the practices,” says Dr Ann-Marie Wilson, Executive Director of 28 Too Many.
