Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict: London Global Summit
28 Too Many are pleased to be participating in a major global summit on ending sexual violence in conflict taking place in London in June.
Sexual violence in conflict inflicts unimaginable suffering and destroys individuals, families and communities. Rape and other forms of sexual violence in conflict are widespread, persistent and have mostly gone unpunished. We are also concerned that female genital mutilation (FGM) and other harmful traditional practices can increase during conflict and post-conflict situations as well as support services for those affected being affected.
The Summit will be co-chaired by the UK Foreign Secretary, the Rt Hon William Hague MP, and Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and will be the largest gathering ever brought together on this subject, with a view to creating irreversible momentum against sexual violence in conflict and practical action that impacts those on the ground. There will also be three days of free public events taking place alongside the main summit, at the London ExCel Centre from the 10 – 12 June. There will be over 150 events taking place in the Summit Fringe, including the UK premiere of Charming Baker’s sculptural work ‘Faith’s Leap’; a silent cinema featuring over 30 films and shorts plus lots more interactive events. In addition there will be a marketplace and exhibition area displaying information from many charities and organisations working against sexual violence and a market place selling crafts and products made by survivors.
28 Too Many are joining with other members of the We Will Speak Out coalition in the exhibition area for a display of the member organisations’ work to end sexual violence.
